What is the ‘Right’ Height to Hang a Picture? What is the ‘Right’ Height to Hang a Picture?

We  attempt not to  handle absolutes here,  however when it  concerns how high to hang a  imagefrench gallery rod, we do have some solid recommendations. We also put the question out to our Framebridge community and you all had some  exceptional  point of views, too. Here we  address all of your  questions about how high to hang frames.

The Eyes Have It

We suggest hanging your art so that the vertical center (the middle of the frame) is 57″ (inches) above the  flooring, or at your eye-level if it  remains in a hallway or entryway where you’re  generally  strolling past it. That  chooses single pieces ( pictures, paintings, posters)hanging wire  along with  plans like gallery walls. Museums and galleries  utilize this  guideline and if it’s good enough for them, it’s  definitely  sufficient for us!

Procedure the height of your piece or  plan, divide in half and  include that number to the 57″ to mark where the top of your frame  must be.  Have a look at our tips for hanging with a hanging wire, sawtooth  wall mount, or corner brackets (on large pieces) for a  completely aligned frame

What if I’m hanging a frame above  furnishings?
What height to hang frames  depends upon what’s around them, too. If you’re hanging frames above  furnishings like a  sofa, bed, or desk, we suggest the bottom of the frame  must be 7 – 10″ above the top of the  furnishings.

As far as width goes, whether it’s a single large piece or a  complete gallery wall, some say it  must  cover about 2/3 of the width of the  sofa, headboard, etc,  however we  believe there’s some wiggle  space and even  created our Triptych gallery wall in king and queen size to fill most of the width of a headboard or sofa.

How about hanging  photos in rooms with high ceilings?
We  believe the  exact same  guideline applies– 57″ off the ground for the vertical center of the piece. Of course if there’s  space, you can stack more pieces up from there!

What about hanging gallery walls and  several frames?

Consider a gallery wall or grouping of  several frames as one big piece. Whether you’re hanging a predesigned gallery wall (ours  featured very  convenient life-size hanging guides which  enable you to align the  whole  plan  simultaneously) or are getting creative with an  diverse gallery wall of your own, the  exact same  guideline applies– 57″ or eye level to the vertical center.  For instance, when hanging three pieces vertically, the center of the middle frame would be at eye level.

Is the 57″ eye-level  guideline set in stone?

There are  obviously exceptions to every  guideline and all of your framed art and  pictures  must work within your existing  area. The  circumstances are as  distinct as your style and there are  lots of ways to hang your art. Have particularly low  furnishings? You may need to adjust.  Actually  big artwork? It may need to come down a bit. Generally we see instances of art hung  too expensive rather than too low.

A measuring tape and level are  necessary,  however a second set of eyes is also very  helpful to have when finding the right height to hang a  image.

As constantly if you have any questions about getting your art up on the wall, our group of designers mores than happy to address them.
